Pro/Am Competitions: What They Are and Why So Many Adults Fall in Love With Them

At Feel Dance Studio, many adults start dancing “just for fun.”
And then one day they ask:

What is Pro/Am? And could I actually do it?

The answer is yes.

What Is Pro/Am?

Pro/Am stands for Professional / Amateur.

It means you, as a student, compete with your professional teacher.
Your teacher is your partner on the competition floor.

This format is extremely popular in the United States and gives adults a structured, supportive, and exciting way to perform and grow.

Unlike traditional Amateur competitions, you do not need to find a separate partner. You train with your coach and step onto the floor together.

Why Adults Choose Pro/Am

  1. Structured progress
You train toward a clear goal. Each competition becomes a milestone.
  2. Confidence building
Walking onto a competition floor changes you. You learn posture, presence, and mental strength.
  3. Personal achievement
You compete at your own level. Bronze, Silver, Gold and beyond. Your journey is individual.
  4. High-level coaching
You are guided directly by a professional who knows exactly how to prepare you.
  5. Community
Competitions are inspiring, elegant, and surprisingly supportive environments.

What Does Preparation Look Like?

Preparation includes:

• Private lessons
• Technical training
• Choreography and musicality
• Conditioning and posture work
• Dress and presentation guidance
• Mental preparation

As U.S. Professional Champions and European finalists, Denis Filonenko and Anna Sergeenko guide students through every step of the process, from first lesson to stepping confidently onto the floor.

Is It Only for “Advanced” Dancers?

Not at all.

Many Pro/Am students begin competing within their first year of dancing.
The system is designed to meet you exactly where you are.

You do not need to be perfect.
You need to be committed.

Why It’s More Than a Competition

Pro/Am is not just about medals.

It is about:

• Setting a goal
• Overcoming nerves
• Discovering elegance
• Becoming stronger, both physically and mentally

For many adults, it becomes one of the most empowering experiences of their lives.

If you are curious about Pro/Am competitions and want to understand what your path could look like, we would love to guide you.

At Feel Dance Studio in Mountain View, we help adults transform not only their dancing — but the way they see themselves.
